Why is foundational learning so crucial?

Foundational Learning - as the term suggests - is the foundation of a child's education.
These are basic literacy, numeracy, and transferable skills, that are the building blocks for a child’s future education.

Extensive research across the world has identified strong foundational learning to be the best predictor of later school success.
When children don’t learn to read early and well, they can never catch up later and continue to perform poorly throughout later school years.
Neuroscience research has clearly shown that the brain is most malleable until the age of 8 or 9 for cognitive learning.

In India, according to The National Achievement Survey (NAS) conducted in 2017, 33% students in Grade 3 in India were unable to read and comprehend grade level texts. Additionally, 37% of Grade 3 students struggled with grade-level mathematical concepts.
This calls for urgent crisis of addressing this dearth and working towards providing equitable learning.

Which skills does it include?

Simple reading, listening, and comprehension skills. E.g. letter and word recognition, listening with comprehension, etc
Performing simple mathematical problems. E.g. identify and discriminate numbers, solving simple addition and subtraction, etc
